Sacraments

Baptism for Infants and Children Under Age 7

Parents of the child must arrange for an interview with Father Al and bring a copy of the child's birth certificate with them to the interview.  If you are not already registered at the parish, you must also complete a parish registration form.

Parents and qualified godparents are required to attend two baptism instructions classes that are conducted on the first and second Mondays of every other month.  The months for the baptism classes are February, April, June, August, October and December.  Baptisms are celebrated on the last Sunday of the month after the 9 a.m. Mass.

Canon law states that a godparent must be a practicing Catholic and must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation.

If you are from another parish and would like to have you child baptized here at St. George, you must contact your priest and go through the preparation process through your parish.

Please contact our parish office at 808-259-7188 for more information.

Baptism for Older Children and Adults

Older children (age 7 and up) who need to be baptized must attend religious education classes on Sunday mornings as well as RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation of Children) classes.  Baptisms for these older children are celebrated at the Easter Vigil Mass.

Adults who wish to be baptized in the Catholic Church must go through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adult) process.  Adult Baptisms are celebrated at the Easter Vigil Mass.

RCIA is also for those adults who have already been baptized in the Church, but may not yet have received the Sacraments of the Eucharist (Holy Communion) and/or Confirmation.  More on the RCIA program below under Religious Education.

Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation is usually received by 2nd year high school CCD students after two years of instruction here at St. George.  Adults who have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation must go through the RCIA process

First Holy Communion

First Holy Communion is usually received by children in the second grade.  Your child must attend religious education classes on Sunday mornings beginning no later than the first grade.  If your child has not attended religious education classes before the second grade or is older than the second grade, he or she must attend religious education classes for two years as well as special preparation classes in their second year.  First Holy Communion at St. George is traditionally celebrated on the first Sunday in May.

Adults must go through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) process.

Marriage

Please call to arrange an appointment with the pastor six months prior to your intended wedding date.

Ministries & Committees

There are many ways to serve God through various ministries in the Church and we encourage our parishioners to become actively involved.  If you are interested in serving in one or more of the following ministries, please call the parish office (808) 259-7188 and leave a message for the coordinator of the ministry or ministries you are interested in serving in.

Pastoral Council

Chairperson:     Maydene Simmons

The Pastoral Council meets on the 2nd Sunday of every month after the 9 a.m. Mass (unless otherwise scheduled) to discuss various topics and issues affecting the parish.  The meetings are conducted in an “ohana” (family) fashion where consensus versus majority makes decisions.    All parishioners are welcome to attend the meetings and offer their ideas, suggestions and comments.

Liturgical Committee

Chairperson:     Carlotta Kidder

Coordinator:      Denis Dela Cruz

The Liturgical Committee, comprised of representatives from various ministries, is responsible for preparing the liturgy for the different seasons throughout the Church year.  While the structure of the Mass itself is never altered, the Liturgical Committee works to enhance the spiritual experience through the use of various visual displays and decorations, seasonal colors, floral arrangements, and music.

Altar Servers

Coordinators:    Bonny Kahalewai & Carol-Louise Carper

Altar Servers assist the priest and deacon with the various parts of the Mass.  Children, youth and adults who have received their 1st Holy Communion are welcomed and encouraged to join this ministry.

Eucharistic Ministries

Coordinator:   Sheila Bush

Lay Eucharistic Ministers (LEMs) serve the Lord by assisting the priest and deacon in serving the precious Body and Blood of Christ to Communicants at Mass.  They also take the Body of Christ to our homebound parishioners on Sunday mornings.  If you or someone you know lives in Waimanalo, is unable to attend Sunday Mass and would like to receive Communion on Sunday mornings, please call the parish office at (808) 259-7188.  Our ministers will be happy to come and visit you!

First Friday Home Visits and Anointing of the Sick

On the first Friday of every month our priest visits our homebound parishioners and takes them the Body of Christ.  Father also administers the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.  If you or someone you know lives in Waimanalo are homebound and would like to have our priest visit on the First Friday of every month, please contact the parish office at (808) 259-7188.

Father will also administer the Anointing of the Sick to those who are in the hospital or nursing home.  Please call the parish office to arrange for a visit.

Lectors

Coordinators:  Carlotta Kidder and Lehua Fuller

Lectors, or Ministers of the Word, serve the Lord by assisting the priest and deacon during Mass in proclaiming the Word of God in readings from the Old and New Testaments.

Music

  Director:  Celia Chun-Wright

The music at our Masses is led by our parish music director, Celia Chun-Wright, and various song leaders.  At the Saturday Vigil Mass, our Kupuna (elders) play along with their ukulele and sing Hawaiian hymns.  Our regular choir sings at the 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Masses (with the children's choir taking the lead at the 9 a.m. Mass on the 3rd Sunday of the Month), and our Youth and Young Adult Choir play the music and sing at the Sunday evening Mass at 6 p.m.

The assembly gathered at the Masses are encouraged to sing along with the song leaders and together give thanks and praise to our Lord in song.  If you play an instrument and/or like to sing, you are always welcome to join our music ministry!

Sacristans

 Vacant at present

Sacristans are those “behind the scenes” ministers who ensure that everything is set and in place in preparation for all Masses during the week (daily morning Mass and Sunday Masses).  The Sacristan also sets up for baptisms, marriages, and funerals.

Ushers

Coordinators:  Gloria Chun & Paul Burnett

Our Ushers are generally the first people you will see as you enter our church.  They will greet you and welcome you and, if you are new to our parish or visiting, they will introduce you to other parishioners to make you feel comfortable and at home.  The Ushers also “pass the collection baskets” during the Offertory.

Outreach and Community Services

Coordinator:  Nani Barboza

Volunteers: Beryl Smith, Fran Smithwaite, John Dixon

Our parish Outreach program serves the town of Waimanalo by running a food pantry for those in the community of all faiths who are in need.  Although there are times when the food supply gets low, donations by parishioners, visitors and friends help to keep our pantry shelves stocked so that we may never have to turn our hungry brothers and sisters away.

Outreach hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon (except holidays or when otherwise posted).  Clients may visit Outreach for food assistance once per week.

Religious Education

CCD (Confraternity of Christian Doctrine) Coordinator: Kealani Riturban

High School Confirmation Coordinator: Vicky De Silva

RCIA is for those adults who desire to become Catholic Christians or who want to learn more about the Catholic faith, and for those adults who were baptized as Catholics but who may have not yet received the Sacrament of Holy Communion and/or the Sacrament of Confirmation.  It is also a way for those who have been away from the Church for a while to “brush up” on their faith.  RCIA classes are held in Mary's Haven on Sunday mornings at 8 a.m. from September through May.
